Alphabet’s Google announced Wednesday that it will invest at least €13 billion, or approximately $15.1 billion, in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years, making it the company’s largest single investment in Europe.

The investment will support new data centers and related infrastructure in four Finnish locations: Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala. Google said the expansion is intended to meet growing demand for services including Gemini, Search, Maps and YouTube.

A major part of the expansion involves securing reliable electricity for the energy-intensive data centers. Google signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with Finnish energy company Fortum tied to the Loviisa nuclear power plant. The agreement will provide Google with up to 50% of the plant’s electricity output and represents the company’s first nuclear power agreement outside the United States.

The agreement is also designed to support the continued operation of the Loviisa facility. Google said the plant’s life-extension program will allow it to continue operating through 2050. The facility currently supplies about 10% of Finland’s electricity and employs roughly 580 people.

Finland has become an attractive location for large data-center projects because of its cold climate and access to low-carbon electricity. Cooler temperatures can reduce the energy required to cool computer servers, while the country’s power grid provides access to large amounts of reliable electricity.

Google’s Finnish expansion will also include additional renewable-energy agreements, grid improvements and a 94-megawatt battery system near the company’s site in Kajaani. Google said the battery system is expected to be operational by late 2027 and will help balance the Finnish power grid.

The company expects the investment to contribute approximately €3.6 billion, or roughly $4.18 billion, annually to Finland’s gross domestic product during the construction phase and support about 7,000 jobs annually once the facilities become operational.

The expansion comes as technology companies continue investing heavily in infrastructure to meet the rapidly increasing demand for AI computing. Google has also increased its broader global capital investment plans as it expands the computing capacity needed to operate and develop its AI services.
