A shooting at the Teotihuacan pyramids in central Mexico left one person dead and at least 13 others injured on Monday, according to updated information from Mexican authorities.
The attack occurred around 11:30 a.m. at the Pyramid of the Moon within the historic complex, a popular tourist destination located northeast of Mexico City. Officials said a gunman opened fire on visitors in the area, causing panic among tourists at the site.
A 32-year-old Canadian woman was killed in the shooting. Authorities reported that seven people sustained gunshot wounds, including two U.S. citizens, while six others suffered injuries such as falls and abrasions during the chaos.
Those shot included individuals from multiple countries: a 6-year-old boy and a 37-year-old woman from Colombia, a 29-year-old Canadian woman, a 32-year-old man from Russia, a 13-year-old girl from Brazil, and two Americans, a 29-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman. Additional injured victims included four more U.S. citizens, along with individuals from Brazil and Colombia.
Mexican media reported the suspect, described as a man believed to be in his mid-20s to early 30s, climbed partway up the pyramid before drawing a weapon and firing at visitors. Reports indicate he may have ordered some individuals to lie on the ground before continuing the attack at another location.
Security personnel, including members of Mexico’s National Guard, responded at the scene. Authorities said the gunman later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though it remains unclear whether he was also struck by return fire.
Officials have not released the suspect’s identity or a motive for the attack. Reports indicated he may have been armed with both a firearm and a knife, though authorities have not confirmed all details.
The incident took place at one of Mexico’s most significant archaeological and tourism sites, drawing attention to security concerns at major cultural landmarks frequented by international visitors. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing.
