U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Anthony Tyrone Higgs, a Bahamian national and lawful permanent resident, in Decatur, Georgia, on September 3. Homeland Security Investigations confirmed through an August investigation that Higgs had illegally voted in the 2020 presidential election.

Higgs faces removal proceedings to revoke his permanent resident status. This is not his first run in with the law, having a criminal record that includes convictions for armed robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, two counts of grand larceny, criminal domestic violence, assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest.

Higgs entered the United States as a lawful permanent resident in 1976. Officials placed Higgs in ICE custody under Enforcement and Removal Operations.

Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin stated that the arrest is one of many intended to crackdown on non-citizens voting in American elections. He noted that even one illegal vote cancels out the ballot of an American citizen. Mullin praised ICE for removing the individual to prevent further interference in elections.

The case is the most recent in a string of actions taken by President Trump's administration as they place greater emphasis on election integrity and immigration enforcement, especially regarding unlawful voting by non-citizens.

Both issues are at the forefront of campaigns as the November general election approaches.
