Iran said on Friday that its response to any new U.S. threats would be "devastating" after Washington pledged to impose the toughest financial penalties in history.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Thursday that the United States will apply "the toughest sanctions in history" on Iran. Bessent suggested the economic measures could reduce the need for major new military operations.
President Donald Trump issued a warning on Wednesday of "Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale." He added that any country allowing its institutions to provide "any type of lifeline to Iran" would face "tremendous economic consequences."
Iranian media quoted a senior official identified as Abdollahi as saying the armed forces stand prepared across land, sea, air, air defense, and cyberspace. "Iran's armed forces will respond to the enemy's new threats with crushing, punishing and devastating responses," the statement read.
The exchange comes amid ongoing U.S. efforts to pressure the Iranian regime through financial isolation rather than direct conflict. Iranian officials have previously described similar U.S. actions as economic terrorism.
Washington has long targeted Iran's oil exports, banking sector, and other revenue sources to limit funding for regional proxies and nuclear activities. The latest threats aim to further squeeze those lifelines and deter third-party support.
