New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart could miss the remainder of the 2026 season after further testing revealed that his left knee injury is more serious than initially believed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that Dart and the Giants are now facing the possibility of season-ending surgery.

Dart suffered the injury early in Monday night’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams after being hit by two defenders while attempting a pass. He initially appeared to have avoided a major injury, with reports pointing to a possible sprained MCL. Dart was able to walk off the field under his own power, but an MRI and additional testing revealed a more concerning situation.

The injury is a significant setback for a Giants team that opened the season 1-1. Dart was replaced by Jameis Winston against Los Angeles, and the veteran struggled to generate offense. Winston completed just 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception as New York failed to score a touchdown.

If Dart is forced to undergo season-ending surgery, Winston would likely become the Giants' starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. The 11-year veteran has extensive NFL starting experience, but Monday's performance showed the challenge facing New York if he has to carry the offense for an extended stretch.

The Giants are already dealing with injuries to several other key players. Wide receiver Malik Nabers suffered a shoulder injury but returned to the game, while left tackle Andrew Thomas and pass rusher Brian Burns also left with injuries. The team will now have to determine how long those players might be available while also preparing for the possibility of losing its starting quarterback.

New York returns home Sunday to face the Tennessee Titans, meaning Winston could be forced into the starting role immediately depending on the final determination of Dart's injury. The Giants began the season with a victory over Dallas before falling to the Rams, but Dart's injury could dramatically alter the direction of the season if he is ultimately ruled out for the year.
