A federal judge extended a preliminary injunction Tuesday blocking President Donald Trump's administration from enforcing its September decision to revoke White House press credentials for reporters from CNN, Politico and MS NOW.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, appointed by Trump in 2017, issued the ruling late Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., finding the outlets likely to succeed on claims that the credential revocations violated their Fifth Amendment due process rights and amounted to First Amendment retaliation and viewpoint discrimination.

The order replaces an earlier temporary restraining order and maintains the status quo during ongoing litigation. Kelly directed administration officials, excluding the president, not to enforce the ban while the case continues.

In his opinion, Kelly noted that President Trump's own statements indicated the move targeted the outlets' coverage rather than national security concerns. The judge explicitly stated that his decision should not suggest Trump's concerns about media accuracy and fairness are unfounded, nor that the government lacks authority to act on genuine national security grounds involving classified information.

The outlets sued after the White House revoked their hard passes last month, arguing the action punished unfavorable reporting. The administration had sought to justify the bans on national security grounds, but the court found little record support for that rationale from the outset.

Kelly determined the outlets demonstrated a likelihood of irreparable harm from the loss of access and that the balance of equities favored maintaining their credentials. The injunction applies to the three organizations' reporters collectively.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between the White House and certain media outlets. Trump has publicly criticized the coverage from the affected organizations and previously indicated plans to appeal adverse rulings.

The preliminary injunction keeps the matter in litigation without resolving the underlying constitutional questions on a final basis.
