Former South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has filed for divorce from her husband, Bryon Noem, ending a marriage that lasted more than three decades and came under increased public scrutiny this year.

Noem filed for divorce in Hamlin County, South Dakota, on April 6, according to court records. The county did not post the documents to its online court system until Monday.

The filing lists “irreconcilable differences” as the basis for the divorce. Noem and Bryon Noem were married on May 23, 1992, and have three children, according to congressional biographical records.

Bryon Noem declined to comment when contacted by local media about the divorce proceedings, saying, “I can’t comment right now.”

The filing comes after months of public speculation surrounding the couple’s marriage. In July, Noem’s mother, Corinne Arnold, told USA TODAY that her daughter planned to end the marriage after the family had discussed the decision earlier in the year.

The marriage also faced renewed attention following reports about Bryon Noem’s private life. A Daily Mail investigation published earlier this year alleged that he had engaged in cross-dressing and had paid adult entertainers. Those allegations brought additional scrutiny to the family, although the divorce filing itself cites only irreconcilable differences as its stated grounds.

Kristi Noem has also faced years of speculation over her relationship with longtime political adviser Corey Lewandowski. In 2021, Noem publicly denied allegations that she and Lewandowski had an affair, calling the claims “total garbage and a disgusting lie.”

The couple’s public appearances had also drawn attention in recent months. Bryon Noem did not attend the August unveiling of a statue honoring Kristi Noem in Pierre, South Dakota, despite her previous statements that her family had supported her during her time as governor.

Noem served as South Dakota’s governor from 2019 until January 2025, when she resigned after being selected to serve as Secretary of Homeland Security. She was later removed from that position in 2026 and was subsequently named the United States special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, according to the U.S. House’s historical record.

Bryon Noem operates an insurance business in South Dakota. Court records list both spouses as living in Castlewood in Hamlin County.

The divorce proceedings now formally place the couple’s separation before a South Dakota court. However, the filing does not publicly identify any specific event or allegation as the reason for the split beyond the stated claim of irreconcilable differences.
