Rep. Mike Lawler is locked in one of the nation's tightest House races as he seeks a third term in New York's 17th Congressional District. The suburban Hudson Valley seat remains a toss-up according to multiple forecasters, including the Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball.
Lawler, who flipped the district in 2022 and won reelection in 2024 despite its Democratic lean in presidential voting, faces Army veteran and former Biden administration official Cait Conley. The race has drawn over $40 million in outside spending as both parties view it as critical to House control.
Recent internal polling from the Lawler campaign showed the incumbent leading 50 percent to 47 percent among likely voters. Other surveys have placed the contest within the margin of error. Lawler has emphasized his record of bipartisanship and willingness to break with party leadership on issues like immigration enforcement.
Conley won her Democratic primary in June and has focused on local concerns including data center development and affordability. The candidates held their first debate in late September, clashing over energy policy and national security.
With early voting set to begin October 24 and the general election on November 3, both campaigns are intensifying efforts in the commuter-heavy district. Republicans see Lawler's crossover appeal as key to holding their narrow House majority amid a challenging national environment for the party.
