Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin gave fans a look inside the elaborate Minecraft city he has spent more than a decade building, complete with high-rises, stadiums, aquariums, and a Trump Tower.
Tomlin, who recently joined NBC as a television analyst after 19 seasons as the Steelers’ head coach, unveiled the virtual city Wednesday on his new YouTube channel. The series focuses on the sprawling world he began creating when his children were younger as a way to connect with them. Even after they grew older, he kept expanding the same digital city into a detailed environment filled with buildings, public spaces, and amenities.
The first episode, titled “Rooftops, Penthouses, and Urban Living,” focused heavily on Tomlin’s high-rise developments and densely populated living spaces. The longtime NFL coach showed off his interest in architecture and explained that he paid close attention to the quality of life of the villagers living throughout his digital city. “I was always really conscious of appropriate amenities,” Tomlin said. “You’ll find an appropriate number of public restrooms and stuff throughout my properties.”
The city contains a surprising level of detail, with therapy rooms, a stadium, rooftop gathering spaces, aquariums, and various bedroom configurations spread throughout the virtual environment.
One notable structure is a Trump Tower that Tomlin said he built in 2015. It forms part of the skyline and serves as a recognizable real-world reference from the period before President Donald Trump’s was elected as President. The building appears as part of the city’s skyline and adds a recognizable real-world reference to his otherwise fictional Minecraft metropolis.
The project gives viewers a very different look at Tomlin, who spent nearly two decades known primarily for football. Rather than focusing on the game, the YouTube series showcases his longtime interest in architecture and the creativity he has poured into the Minecraft world. What began as an activity to spend time with his children eventually developed into a massive virtual construction project that continued long after they grew older.
Wednesday’s video marked the beginning of what Tomlin is calling a series, leaving viewers with plenty more of his digital city to explore in future episodes. For someone long associated with the sidelines, the elaborate Minecraft project offers an unexpected glimpse at a hobby that has quietly occupied his time for more than a decade.
