California Gov. Gavin Newsom renewed his push to remove President Donald Trump from office after Trump’s comments about the potential threat Iran could pose to Los Angeles and San Diego sparked backlash from California officials.

Newsom called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked against Trump, saying the president is “mentally ill” and declaring, “TIME FOR THE 25TH!” He made the remarks in statements to multiple media outlets on Tuesday.

The comments followed Trump’s appearance at a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, where he discussed the ongoing conflict with Iran and the economic costs associated with the war. During the speech, Trump said Iran could “take out a city” and then mentioned Los Angeles and San Diego, describing it as a “very small price to pay” in the context of keeping the country and world safe.

The remarks quickly drew criticism from Newsom and other California officials. Newsom called Trump “deranged and dangerous” in a post on X, while Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also criticized the president’s comments.

The White House pushed back on the interpretation that Trump was suggesting the United States should allow Iran to attack the two cities. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said Trump was explaining the threat that a nuclear-armed Iran could pose to American cities and arguing that U.S. action was intended to prevent Iran from gaining that capability.

Newsom has previously called for the 25th Amendment to be considered. In July, he described one of Trump’s speeches on election integrity as a potential “25th Amendment moment.” The amendment provides a constitutional process for transferring presidential powers when a president is unable to discharge the duties of the office. It requires action by the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet, or another body established by Congress, rather than allowing a governor or individual member of Congress to remove a president unilaterally.
