A Russian drone struck a 16-story residential building in Kyiv's central Pechersk district on Friday morning, killing a 14-year-old boy and injuring at least seven other people, Ukrainian officials said.

Police reported that the jet-powered Shahed-type drone hit the structure between the seventh and 10th floors during a broader barrage. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the strike damaged the apartment block, with emergency services responding to fires and debris. The number of injured later rose to around 20 across the capital, including a nine-year-old boy, with eight hospitalized.

The attack formed part of a massive overnight Russian drone assault on Ukraine that involved nearly 300 drones, according to Ukrainian air force reports. Strikes also damaged buildings in other Kyiv districts and hit non-residential sites. One person died in a separate strike on the southern city of Odesa.

Russia has conducted repeated attacks on Kyiv and surrounding areas in recent weeks using faster, high-flying drones that prove more difficult for Ukrainian defenses to intercept. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the reports of casualties in the capital.

Russia maintains that its forces target military and defense industry sites rather than civilians in the conflict that began with its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The latest barrage followed similar strikes the previous night that killed two people in Kyiv.

Rescue operations continued at the site amid reports of shattered windows and structural damage. Officials noted the challenges Ukraine faces in countering evolving Russian drone technology amid ongoing shortages in air defense capabilities.
