Russian strikes killed at least 78 people and wounded 215 others across Ukraine in the past two days, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The deadliest single attack occurred Thursday in Kramatorsk in Donetsk Oblast, where a Russian guided aerial bomb struck two passenger buses, killing around 35 civilians and injuring 18 more. City authorities described the target as having no military value, with victims simply going about daily business. Additional strikes in the oblast brought the regional toll higher.
A day earlier, a Russian cruise missile hit a five-story residential building in Pryluky in Chernihiv Oblast, killing 22 people, including five children, and injuring 54 others. The attack coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin's birthday.
Other incidents included drone strikes and glide bombs in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, where at least two were killed and 18 injured over the past day, and scattered deaths reported in Dnipropetrovsk and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted many of the 136 drones launched overnight, though some struck residential areas.
Zelensky criticized the United States for pursuing economic ties with Russia while the war continues, and he called for expanded access to Starlink satellite service to improve targeting of Russian launch sites. He described the assaults as terror against civilians.
The latest barrage follows a pattern of Russian efforts to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses and target energy and civilian infrastructure ahead of winter. Ukrainian officials noted increased civilian casualties in 2026 compared to the prior year.
The war remains in a dangerous stalemate, with both sides exchanging strikes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts.
