Federal authorities charged six people across California, Kansas, and Louisiana with crimes including illegal voting, fraudulent voter registration, and identity fraud, according to a Department of Justice announcement.

In the Central District of California, James Brass, 47, of Victorville, was arrested last week on charges along with two co-defendants. Prosecutors allege the trio paid individuals on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles to sign ballot initiative petitions using stolen identities of registered voters.

A federal grand jury in the District of Kansas indicted Mariana Alexandra Dewey, 24, a Peruvian national and U.S. permanent resident living in Wichita. She faces charges of false claim of citizenship, false claim of U.S. citizenship to vote, fraudulent election conduct, and voting by an alien in a federal election. Dewey is accused of registering and casting a ballot in the November 2024 election that included federal races.

In the Western District of Louisiana, Bridget Johnson, 53, of Cotton Valley, was charged with fraudulent voter registration and voting by an alien. Michael Wedderburn, 52, of Jamaica, faces a charge of voting by an alien. Johnson allegedly submitted a voter registration application for Wedderburn, who was ineligible, and he is accused of voting in the November 2024 election.

U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that finding those that are gaming the election system or committing voter fraud remains a top priority. "Let this be a reminder that those who seek to undermine the integrity of our elections will be charged accordingly," Blanche said in a post on X.

The cases is one of many as ongoing federal efforts to prosecute noncitizen voting and related fraud increase under President Donald Trump. FBI Director Kash Patel also posted a statement over the arrests, in which he said that election security will remain a major pillar of the FBI under his leadership.
