Sony is exploring a new way to turn PlayStation controllers into contactless payment devices, according to a recently published patent describing technology that could allow controllers to process purchases directly.
The patent details a controller equipped with technology capable of communicating with payment-enabled devices. A user could potentially tap a credit card, smartphone or other compatible device against the controller to initiate a transaction.
The proposed system appears designed to allow payments without requiring users to enter card information manually through the PlayStation interface. Depending on how the technology is ultimately implemented, the controller could communicate payment information to the console or another connected system to complete a purchase.
The patent also describes potential applications beyond traditional gaming purchases. The technology could provide another method for authenticating or transferring payment information during transactions involving digital content or services.
However, the patent does not mean Sony is preparing to add tap-to-pay functionality to an upcoming PlayStation controller. Companies frequently patent technologies that never become commercial products, and Sony has not announced plans to introduce the feature.
If implemented, the technology could eventually make purchasing games, downloadable content, and other PlayStation services more seamless by allowing users to interact with a payment card or smartphone directly through the controller.
