Williamson County authorities have charged Benedict Chinedu Ogbodiegwu Jr., 26, with murder after the Labor Day stabbing death of 62-year-old Andrew James Wimsatt in a park in Round Rock, Texas.

The attack occurred around 11 a.m. on September 7 in a park near the 2400 block of Chandler Creek Boulevard. Surveillance footage from multiple locations shows a person, allegedly Ogbodiegwu, approaching Wimsatt from behind as the victim sat on a bench. Ogbodiegwu then wrapped his arm around Wimsatt and stabbed him repeatedly in the neck. After Wimsatt fell to the ground, the suspect put his knee on the victim's chest and made a sawing motion across his neck with the knife before fleeing toward the park's pool area.

A woman discovered Wimsatt's body shortly after 11 a.m. and alerted authorities. Investigators determined the attack was random and that the two men did not know each other. Wimsatt, a civil engineer and researcher at Texas A&M with degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, was returning after a visit to his mother in a nursing home.

Ogbodiegwu was taken into custody late on Labor Day. A search of his residence recovered a knife with blood on it and sweatpants with red stains. He faces a $1 million bond at the Williamson County Jail.

Court records indicate Ogbodiegwu had prior arrests, including for theft earlier this year and for failing to identify himself or providing false information in June. The Williamson County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Texas Rangers, continues to investigate the case.
