President Donald Trump is returning to the campaign trail in Iowa and Kansas this Sunday after reinstating two rallies that had been canceled earlier in the week, bringing the president back to the road just days before the 2026 midterm elections.
The Republican president is now scheduled to make back-to-back appearances in the two Midwestern states, according to a person familiar with his plans who spoke to The Associated Press on Friday.
The original cancellations were announced by the Republican National Committee, which said Trump would instead participate in telephone rallies to reach voters across a wider number of states. The RNC described the effort as a final "72-hour sprint" designed to maximize the president's outreach during the closing days of the campaign.
However, the plans were subsequently revised to accommodate the additional telephone events while restoring the Iowa and Kansas appearances. The RNC has announced plans for telephone rallies in nearly 20 states, with additional events potentially being added.
Both states feature closely contested Senate races that could play an important role in determining control of Congress. In Kansas, Republican Sen. Roger Marshall is facing Democrat Adam Hamilton, while Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson is competing against Democrat Josh Turek in Iowa.
Trump's return to the two states comes amid an intensive October campaign schedule. The president had already held 25 rallies during the month as he worked to support Republican candidates and encourage voters to turn out ahead of Election Day.
The reinstated appearances restore two important stops to Trump's final campaign push, while the expanded telephone rally schedule will allow him to address voters in numerous additional states without traveling to each location.
With the midterm elections approaching, Republicans are seeking to maintain their congressional majorities, making the final days of campaigning especially important for candidates in competitive races.
