President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he believes he should receive the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, while acknowledging that he remains uncertain about whether the Norwegian Nobel Committee will select him.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the committee is expected to announce its decision Friday and suggested his record could make him an unlikely choice.
"I don't know what their decision is going to be," Trump said. "They have a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me."
Trump has repeatedly argued since returning to the White House last year that his diplomatic efforts and involvement in international conflicts have earned him consideration for the prestigious award.
"It is about that time," Trump said Wednesday. He also pointed to the support he received from Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize and gave her medal to Trump in January while seeking U.S. backing for her efforts in Venezuela.
Trump has argued that he deserves the award in part because of his involvement in efforts surrounding eight international conflicts since taking office. Leaders from Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have also said they nominated Trump, although those claims cannot be independently verified.
The president's record on those conflicts, however, remains disputed. Parties involved in some of the disputes have challenged the extent of Trump's diplomatic role, while fighting has resumed in several areas that his administration has sought to stabilize, including the Democratic Republic of Congo and the border between Cambodia and Thailand.
Trump has also been unable to secure an end to Russia's war in Ukraine, despite promising during his campaign to bring the conflict to an end quickly after returning to office.
The Middle East has likewise remained a major foreign-policy challenge. U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran have contributed to a prolonged conflict that has disrupted global energy markets and pushed gasoline prices higher ahead of the November midterm elections.
The Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled to be announced Friday. Among those considered contenders for the 2026 award are Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court, and the United Nations special rapporteur for the Palestinian territories.
