The United States and China agreed Saturday to establish a dedicated communication channel for handling artificial intelligence-related incidents, marking a step toward managing risks from advanced AI systems.

The pact emerged from a three-day summit in Washington between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both governments issued statements confirming the new mechanism, which will allow notification of AI incidents that could pose national security threats and facilitate discussion of risks and benefits.

An AI-specific dialogue is scheduled for November. The two sides also agreed to accelerate work on military crisis communications and to maintain cooperation through a Board of Trade focused on bilateral issues. The White House said the board began operating this week.

Trump told reporters outside the White House that the United States would not slow its AI development efforts. "The United States of America is not going to be putting on brakes," he said. He indicated limits on what the U.S. would share with China.

Xi returned to Beijing on Saturday following the visit. The summit produced no major breakthroughs on broader issues, but officials described the establishment of working groups as important for preventing disputes from escalating.

Preparatory talks between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng earlier in the week laid groundwork for the AI channel. Bessent described the mechanism as a way to move from opacity to greater transparency between the world's top two AI powers.

Analysts noted that the agreement reflects mutual recognition of shared vulnerabilities in areas such as cybersecurity and potential misuse by non-state actors. The U.S. maintains a lead in frontier AI capabilities, and the channel focuses on incident response rather than restricting American innovation.

The developments follow months of heightened attention to AI safety risks, including concerns over uncontrollable systems and dual-use technologies. Both nations have emphasized keeping advanced AI under human control while pursuing competitive advantages.
