A 64-year-old Richmond man was arrested after allegedly duct-taping his wife to a chair and leaving her in the basement for nearly an hour so he could watch a football game without interruptions.
Police arrested Terry Ward on Sunday, October 11, after responding to a report involving his wife, who told officers that her husband had bound her to a chair with tape and left her in the basement of their home.
Ward was charged with abduction and misdemeanor assault and battery against a family or household member, according to a police report cited by WTVR-TV.
“When I arrived on scene, [the wife] stated that her husband had tied her to a chair with tape in the basement,” the police report stated. Ward reportedly acknowledged the allegations when questioned by officers.
“Terry stated that he did indeed tie his wife [name redacted] to a chair and placed her down in the basement,” the report continued.
The woman told police she had been restrained for nearly an hour. Officers also documented bruises and contusions on her arms, which she said resulted from being tied to the chair.
According to the police report, Ward told officers he had restrained his wife so he could watch the football game upstairs without being interrupted.
The case has drawn attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the alleged domestic incident, with Ward accused of forcibly confining his wife to avoid interruptions while watching sports.
Ward faces an abduction charge and a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery against a family or household member. The allegations remain accusations, and the charges do not establish that he is guilty.
