Family members of September 11 victims have launched an online petition urging organizers of the 25th anniversary remembrance ceremony to exclude New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani from the event at Ground Zero.

The petition, posted on Change.org in early July, argues that Mamdani's presence would disrespect the memory of those killed and cause additional pain to survivors and relatives. Giovanni Galante, whose wife Grace Catherine Galante died in the north tower, organized the effort alongside other victims' families.

Signatories point to Mamdani's public positions and associations as reasons for their objection. They highlight his reluctance to unequivocally condemn phrases such as "globalize the intifada," his past statements on radicalization, and ties to individuals perceived as hostile to American values. The petition notes that Mamdani, the city's first Muslim mayor who took office in January, has promoted his faith in ways that some families view as incompatible with the solemn occasion.

As of recent reports, the petition has collected more than 80,000 signatures. Several Republican senators have expressed support for the families' request, calling on the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to reconsider Mamdani's participation.

The 25th anniversary ceremony is scheduled for September 11 at the former World Trade Center site. Organizers have not publicly responded to the petition demands.

Mamdani has addressed some criticisms by stating he would discourage use of inflammatory phrases while acknowledging concerns about antisemitism. Critics maintain that his record remains insufficient to warrant inclusion in the commemorative events.

The petition continues to gain traction online, reflecting ongoing divisions over the mayor's suitability for official 9/11 observances.
