Buckingham Palace confirmed Sunday that the upcoming state visit by Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the United States will proceed as planned, despite a shooting at a Washington, D.C. media event over the weekend.
The announcement followed a Saturday night incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which occurred less than 48 hours before the royal couple was scheduled to begin a four-day state visit. The event raised immediate security concerns among officials on both sides of the Atlantic, prompting coordinated reviews of protective measures.
In its statement, Buckingham Palace said the king was “greatly relieved” that President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and other attendees were not seriously harmed during the incident. The palace also expressed appreciation for emergency and security personnel involved in the response.
A senior U.K. government official said British and American security teams have been working closely to ensure appropriate arrangements remain in place ahead of the visit. The trip is expected to begin on Monday and will include stops in Washington and New York.
The state visit is intended to mark longstanding ties between the United Kingdom and the United States as America approaches its 250th anniversary. During the itinerary, King Charles is scheduled to address the U.S. Congress, becoming the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. The royal couple is also expected to meet privately with President Trump and attend a formal state dinner.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also spoke with President Trump on Sunday, according to Downing Street, expressing relief that both Trump and his wife were safe following the weekend’s violence and wishing a quick recovery to a law enforcement officer injured in the attack.
The conversation also touched on broader international issues, including tensions related to the Strait of Hormuz and global economic concerns, as both governments continue coordinating ahead of the high-profile diplomatic visit.
