A massive sinkhole opened Tuesday morning under the driveway of actor Nicolas Cage's $10.5 million Malibu beachfront mansion, swallowing asphalt and concrete in the Lechuza Beach area.

Local firefighters responded around 5:45 a.m. to reports of a suspected gas main break at the property on Sea Level Drive. The collapse, attributed to coastal erosion, created a roughly 30-by-30-foot hole that grew larger by evening to approximately 30 by 60 feet and 25 to 30 feet deep.

The incident damaged a gas line and water line, leading the Southern California Gas Company to shut off service to a section of the street. No one was home at the time, and the residence appeared to be undergoing renovations.

Malibu officials declared a local emergency Tuesday evening after the expanding sinkhole restricted access for residents and emergency vehicles. The city red-tagged 31 properties, initially prohibiting entry to five homes before expanding the order. No injuries were reported.

The home, purchased by Cage in 2024, is a four-level structure of nearly 4,000 square feet with direct beach access. The private neighborhood lies between the Pacific Ocean and Pacific Coast Highway. The property sits in an area popular with celebrities due to restricted access.

Remnants of Hurricane Marie, which brought high surf, flooding, and heavy rain to Southern California over the Labor Day weekend, are believed to have contributed to the erosion.

Cage's representatives have not publicly commented on the incident.
