Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat, is allegedly set to make an unusual appearance at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas this evening, using a video message to highlight President Trump and Republican Senator Dave McCormick’s efforts involving the American steel industry.

Sen. McCormick is scheduled to speak at the convention later tonight as Republicans gather ahead of the November midterm elections.

Fetterman’s appearance represents a notable instance of a Democratic senator publicly aligning with Republican officials on an issue that has particular importance in Pennsylvania, where steel manufacturing has long played a major role in the state’s industrial economy.

Democrat party officials are expected to see the move from Fetterman as political mutiny. The Associated Press reported Wednesday that his relationship with the Democratic Party has become increasingly strained.

The message will reportedly focus on policies intended to support domestic steel production, including tariffs on foreign steel. Trump has made domestic manufacturing and trade policy major components of his administration’s economic agenda. McCormick, who was elected to the Senate from Pennsylvania in 2024, has also made manufacturing and economic investment central themes of his work. Ahead of the convention, he highlighted more than $100 billion in new investment coming to Pennsylvania and has promoted policies aimed at reducing energy costs for businesses and workers.

The surprise appearance also comes as Fetterman increasingly breaks with portions of his party on several issues. The Pennsylvania senator has maintained positions that have drawn criticism from Democrats, including his support for Israel and his willingness to work with Republicans on certain issues.

The Republican convention is the first national GOP convention held ahead of a midterm election. The two-day event in Dallas is focused on the Republican agenda and the party’s candidates ahead of the November elections, with Trump scheduled to deliver major addresses during the gathering's first day. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to do the same on Thursday night.
