Carson Hocevar earned the first NASCAR Cup Series victory of his career Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, holding off Chris Buescher by 0.114 seconds in the Jack Link's 500. Driving the No. 77 Chevrolet for Spire Motorsports, the 23-year-old Michigan native led 19 of the final 37 laps and survived three late restarts to secure the win in his 91st Cup start.
Hocevar, known as 'Hurricane' for his aggressive style, received a crucial push from third-place finisher Alex Bowman in the No. 48 Chevrolet during the final lap. He celebrated by sitting on the doorsill for a victory lap, briefly contacting the wall before climbing onto the roof to salute fans.
The 188-lap race on the 2.66-mile superspeedway featured 51 lead changes among 16 drivers, with Christopher Bell leading the most laps at 31 before finishing 17th. Ryan Preece won Stage 1, and Ross Chastain took Stage 2.
Three cautions slowed the field, including a massive 26-car pileup on Lap 115 in Turn 3 that eliminated contenders like Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson and others, prompting a 10-minute red flag. Ty Gibbs crashed on Lap 124 after tire damage, and Erik Jones spun on Lap 182 to set up the final three-lap shootout.
Post-race inspection confirmed Hocevar's win with no issues for the No. 77.
"I’ve had this thought up for a while. And I’ve messed it up every which way to not be able to do it," Hocevar said emotionally in victory lane. "I’m just so thankful. This is the biggest dream I’ve ever thought of... Hopefully, my grandfather is watching." He noted his grandmother's passing last year.
Buescher finished second in the No. 17 Ford. "That was a fun race all the way until the end. Man, it was close," he said. Bowman added, "He deserved it for sure, and this is a perfect place for him to get it."
From Portage, Michigan, Hocevar joined Spire Motorsports full-time in 2024 as a rookie standout and recently signed a long-term extension. This marks the second first-time winner of 2026, following Ty Gibbs at Bristol.
