Democratic Rep. Jared Golden of Maine voiced support this week for President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian imports.

Golden, whose 2nd Congressional District borders Canada, told the Portland Press Herald on Tuesday that any Canadian retaliation would not succeed in the long run. "If Canada thinks they’re better off without our goods, I wish them good luck," he said. "I suspect in the long run, it won’t go well for them."

The comments came after the Trump administration imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on key Canadian imports following the collapse of trade talks. The tariffs took effect around Aug. 22. Trump has accused Canada of imposing high duties on U.S. farmers and other unfair practices.

Golden has a record of backing Trump's tariff approach. He was the only House Democrat to vote against a resolution condemning the tariffs earlier this year.

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins took a different stance. She urged the administration to return to negotiations after Canada removed seafood and fish from its retaliatory tariff list, citing potential harm to Maine lobstermen.

Golden is not seeking reelection this year. His district has supported Trump in past elections.
