State Sen. Mayes Middleton secured the Republican nomination for Texas attorney general on Tuesday after defeating U.S. Rep. Chip Roy in the party's primary runoff.
Unofficial results showed Middleton with approximately 55 percent of the vote compared to Roy's 45 percent, with the majority of precincts reporting. The contest followed a March primary in which Middleton led with about 39 percent, and Roy received roughly 32 percent, forcing the runoff.
Middleton, a Galveston-area oil and gas executive and former leader of the Texas House Freedom Caucus, self-funded more than $16 million in the race. His campaign emphasized conservative priorities and alignment with President Trump. Roy, a prominent conservative congressman, had entered the race with higher name recognition but could not overcome Middleton's financial advantage in advertising and outreach.
The victory positions Middleton to succeed term-limited Attorney General Ken Paxton, who opted not to seek re-election and instead pursued a U.S. Senate seat. In the November general election, Middleton will face Democratic state Sen. Nathan Johnson of Dallas, who won his party's nomination.
Voter turnout in the runoff remained modest statewide, consistent with typical off-year primary participation. Middleton's win reflects strong support among conservative voters for his legislative record on issues including border security, energy policy, and limited government.
Campaign finance reports highlighted Middleton's personal investment as a decisive factor, allowing extensive television and mail advertising across the state. Roy conceded the race late Tuesday night.
The general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026.
