A Memphis homeowner successfully defended his property early Tuesday morning when he came face-to-face with a suspected burglar breaking into his residence on Eldridge Avenue in North Memphis.
According to Memphis police, the armed homeowner caught 33-year-old Simeon Pratcher entering through a window around 1 a.m. and held him at gunpoint until officers arrived. The homeowner fired two shots during the incident, but Pratcher was not injured and was taken into custody without further incident. He now faces charges of aggravated burglary and possession of burglary tools.
The homeowner told local media this was the second break-in at his home in recent days. Following the first burglary, in which thousands of dollars' worth of items were stolen, two other suspects were arrested.
In a defiant interview, the homeowner stated, “This is my home. I mean, I should be able to enjoy it without people comin’ through the window on me.” He added, “I’m not runnin’.”
The incident highlights the growing frustration among law-abiding citizens in high-crime areas who are increasingly forced to protect themselves and their families due to repeated failures by the justice system to keep repeat offenders off the streets.
