President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he plans to campaign for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska as part of an aggressive schedule of appearances ahead of the November midterm elections.

Trump told reporters he expects to make “a lot of stops” during the final 30 days before Election Day, including a trip to Alaska to support Sullivan’s reelection campaign. Trump has endorsed Sullivan as he seeks another term in the Senate.

Sullivan is facing former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola in the November general election. The race is being closely watched because Alaska’s Senate seat could become important in determining control of the chamber.

Sullivan and Peltola advanced from Alaska’s August nonpartisan primary. Peltola finished first in the primary, while Sullivan placed second, setting up a closely contested general election.

Trump’s planned appearance comes as he seeks to use his political influence to help Republican candidates across the country. The president has said his priority is maintaining Republican control of both the House and Senate and has indicated that he will travel to several states where GOP candidates face competitive races.

The Alaska contest also has an unusual complication: another candidate named Dan Sullivan, Daniel J. Sullivan, advanced through the primary and will appear on the general-election ballot. Republicans have expressed concerns that the similar names could create confusion among voters.

Trump’s involvement is expected to give the incumbent Republican additional national attention as the campaign enters its final stretch.
