President Donald Trump has renewed his effort to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position on the Board of Governors.

In a letter dated August 5 and sent this week, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino informed Cook that the president is considering her removal. The letter gave her 21 days to respond to allegations that she committed mortgage fraud in 2021 by listing two different properties, a condo in Georgia and a house in Michigan, as her primary residence on mortgage applications.

This action follows the Supreme Court’s June 29 ruling that temporarily blocked Trump’s earlier attempt to fire Cook. The 5-4 decision emphasized the importance of protecting the Federal Reserve from political influence.

Trump first announced plans to fire Cook in August 2025 over the same allegations. Cook, the first Black woman to serve as a Fed governor, has remained in her role pending legal proceedings. Her attorney has described the claims as baseless.

No president has previously sought to remove a sitting Federal Reserve Governor since the central bank’s founding in 1913. The renewed effort comes amid ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and the Fed over monetary policy.
