The United Nations issued a warning this week about a rapidly intensifying El Niño weather pattern that could rank among the strongest on record. The World Meteorological Organization, a UN agency, updated its forecast on September 3 to highlight the event's potential severity amid already elevated global temperatures.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that El Niño is being supersized before our eyes, placing the planet in a danger zone of extreme weather. The WMO described the phenomenon as firmly established and expected to intensify into a very strong event in the coming months, with impacts on rainfall and temperature patterns that include heightened risks of floods, drought, and extreme heat.

Forecasters project the El Niño will peak toward the end of 2026 and carry a near-100 percent likelihood of persisting through February 2027. This marks the first time the WMO has expressed such a high degree of certainty in its outlooks. Sea surface temperatures in key Pacific monitoring regions have already risen more than 2 degrees Celsius above average, with subsurface temperatures exceeding norms by more than 8 degrees Celsius in some areas.

The agency noted that only three other very strong El Niño events have been recorded since 1950. The current trajectory suggests this one may surpass prior peaks, potentially making 2027 the warmest year on record when combined with background warming trends. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo emphasized that the event has the potential to deliver a massive blow to communities and economies worldwide.

In response, the WMO has launched its largest mobilization of meteorological organizations in its history to distribute forecasts to vulnerable areas. El Niño typically disrupts weather patterns by pushing drought to regions such as Southeast Asia, Central America, and northern South America while increasing rainfall and storm risks elsewhere.

The natural climate cycle occurs independently of human activities but can amplify existing temperature and weather extremes. Governments and organizations are urged to prepare for potential crop disruptions, infrastructure strain, and humanitarian needs based on the updated projections.
