Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that the war with Russia currently appears likely to continue through the winter, following meetings with U.S. envoys seeking to revive diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

Zelenskyy met with President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner in Kyiv. The meetings came one day after the two U.S. officials held more than three hours of discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

After the talks, Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to continue working with the United States but acknowledged the possibility that fighting could extend into the winter months.

“We very much hope that we will be able to reach agreements with our American partners,” Zelenskyy said, adding that continued support from the United States and Europe would be important if the war continues through winter.

The discussions covered potential security and economic guarantees for Ukraine, air-defense supplies and support for the coming winter. Zelenskyy has also called for the return of trilateral negotiations involving the United States, Russia and Ukraine.

Witkoff and Kushner described their discussions in positive terms. Witkoff called the talks “substantive” and said the United States believes there are elements needed to move toward an agreement, while emphasizing that both Russia and Ukraine would have to make compromises.

No cease-fire or peace agreement was announced Sunday. However, U.S. officials said the meetings produced discussions about possible next steps, with further developments expected in the coming weeks.

The Kyiv meetings marked the first official visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Ukraine in their current roles. Their trip is part of the Trump administration’s renewed effort to bring Russia and Ukraine back toward negotiations after previous diplomatic efforts stalled.

For now, the fighting continues, with Russia and Ukraine maintaining strikes against targets on each other’s territory while diplomatic efforts remain underway.
