A copy of Captain America Comics No. 1 has sold for $716,750 at auction after remaining hidden in a cardboard box for nearly 80 years.

Published in 1941 by Timely Comics, the landmark issue introduced Captain America, his teenage sidekick Bucky, and the villain Red Skull. The comic also featured the now-famous cover depicting Captain America punching Adolf Hitler.

The copy reportedly belonged to a family that had kept it stored in a cardboard box for decades. Its discovery eventually brought the nearly century-old comic to the attention of collectors and auctioneers, where its rarity and historical significance drove the final price into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Captain America Comics No. 1 is among the most important Golden Age comic books ever published. It arrived during World War II and established the patriotic superhero as a character closely associated with America's fight against Nazi Germany.

The issue's value is driven not only by its age but also by its condition, rarity, and significance to the history of Marvel's most recognizable characters. Copies in exceptional condition are particularly sought after by collectors.

The $716,750 sale demonstrates how valuable overlooked collectibles can become decades after they were originally purchased. What was once an inexpensive comic book ultimately became a six-figure piece of American pop-culture history.
