The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 2,566 confirmed measles cases in the United States through August 13, 2026. This figure surpasses the full-year total of 2,289 cases recorded in 2025 and marks the highest number since 1991.

The data shows 2,550 cases reported across 47 jurisdictions, with an additional 16 cases among international visitors. Nearly all cases, or 94 percent, have been linked to outbreaks, including 38 new outbreaks identified this year.

Most infections have occurred among unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status. Children under 5 account for 20 percent of cases, while those aged 5 to 19 represent 48 percent.

The surge has placed the nation's measles elimination status, achieved in 2000, under review. Health authorities note that sustained transmission could lead to a formal reassessment by international bodies.

Prior years saw far fewer cases. The United States recorded 285 cases in 2024, 59 in 2023, and 121 in 2022. The current trend reflects a significant increase over the past two years.

Outbreaks have spread across multiple states, with notable activity in Pennsylvania and other regions. Officials continue to track cases through weekly updates and urge verification of vaccination records.
