Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana accused Rep. Sam Graves of Missouri of blocking a Freedom Caucus-backed bill that would have canceled the federal fuel tax for three months.

In a tweet, Higgins wrote that Graves had “just killed” the bill, which he said the Freedom Caucus intended to bring to the House floor the following night.

“Establishment elitist Sam Graves… lifetime Heritage score of 69… just killed the Freedom Caucus bill that would have canceled the federal fuel tax for 3 months,” Higgins wrote. “Our intention was to bring the bill to the House floor tomorrow night. Man wants his taxes. And he was rude about it. Unbelievable. The swamp is fighting hard to come back.”

The bill was introduced by Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland and would temporarily suspend the federal gasoline and diesel taxes. The federal government currently collects 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel.

The proposal comes as lawmakers debate how to address elevated fuel costs while maintaining funding for federal transportation programs. Graves, who chairs the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, has previously raised concerns about the impact of a gas-tax holiday on the Highway Trust Fund.

Higgins' criticism highlights a disagreement among House Republicans over how to provide relief to Americans facing higher fuel costs and whether temporarily suspending the federal fuel tax is the appropriate approach.

It remains unclear whether the legislation will receive another opportunity for a House vote.
