President Donald Trump said Friday that he would consider appointing rapper Nicki Minaj as White House press secretary, entertaining the proposal during an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson.

During an appearance on The Benny Show, Johnson asked Trump whether Minaj could become the administration's next press secretary. Trump responded positively to the suggestion.

"That's a good idea. I think I'll have to think about that," Trump said.

The president then turned the question toward Johnson himself, joking that the commentator might also be a good candidate for the position.

The exchange follows growing speculation about Minaj potentially joining the Trump administration after White House Communications Director Steven Cheung publicly floated the idea earlier in the week.

On October 25, Cheung shared a video of himself interviewing Minaj aboard Air Force One, accompanying the footage with the caption: "Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!"

Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz also joined the discussion, asking Minaj's fanbase, known as the Barbz, what they thought about the possibility.

Minaj responded to the social media attention with an American flag emoji and a smiling, sweating emoji.

The speculation gained additional attention following Minaj's appearance alongside Trump at a Republican campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, on October 25. During the event, the rapper publicly praised the president's leadership, economic policies and efforts to help Republican candidates ahead of the November midterm elections.

Minaj told the crowd that Trump had changed the country's energy and expressed her continued support for his administration.

"It is an honour to stand with you every single time," she said, promising to support him in the future.

The possibility of Minaj taking over the press secretary position comes after Katie Zacharia's departure following an unusually brief five-day tenure. The position remains vacant as the administration considers its next appointment.

However, Trump's comments did not amount to a formal announcement or confirmation that Minaj has entered the selection process. No official appointment has been made.

For now, the rapper's potential move into the White House press operation remains an intriguing possibility after both Trump and senior administration figures publicly entertained the idea.
