Three prominent news organizations announced Monday they will sue President Donald Trump and several top aides over a ban that revoked their reporters' access to the White House grounds.

CNN, Politico and MS NOW stated in a joint release that they informed the government of their intent to file the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia later that day. The outlets seek an emergency order to immediately restore their journalists' credentials, arguing the action violates the First Amendment and due process protections.

President Trump announced the ban Friday on Truth Social, accusing the three outlets of writing "fiction or lies" about his administration and warning that other "Fake News Media Outlets" could follow. Reporters from the organizations were denied entry and had their passes confiscated when they attempted to enter the White House on Saturday.

The draft complaint names Trump, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Communications Director Steven Cheung and Secret Service Director Sean Curran as defendants. It claims the White House revoked access without notice or process solely because of objections to the outlets' reporting, which the suit describes as unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination.

CNN was scheduled to serve as the television pool reporter traveling with Trump to New York on Monday for the United Nations General Assembly but was removed from that role. The outlets plan to cite precedents such as the 1977 case Sherrill v. Knight, in which a federal appeals court ruled the White House cannot arbitrarily deny press access based on the content of coverage.

Trump has long criticized what he calls negative and inaccurate coverage from these and other legacy media organizations. The lawsuit marks the latest escalation in longstanding tensions between the administration and certain outlets over press access and reporting standards.
