President Donald Trump is reportedly discussing whether Secretary Pete Hegseth should remain in his Cabinet following Republicans’ sweeping losses in the November 3 midterm elections, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis being considered as a possible replacement.

According to a CBS News report published Wednesday, Trump has asked advisers whether Hegseth should continue leading the Pentagon. The president has not made a final decision, and the discussions do not necessarily mean Hegseth is about to be removed from his position.

DeSantis has emerged as one potential successor being discussed. The Florida governor previously served in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps and has maintained a prominent role in Republican politics. He was also considered for the Pentagon position during Trump’s transition before the president ultimately selected Hegseth.

The discussions come as Republicans face a major political setback after Democrats captured control of both the House and Senate in the midterm elections. The losses are expected to bring increased congressional scrutiny of the Trump administration, including its military and foreign policy decisions.

Hegseth has faced controversy throughout his tenure, including criticism from Democrats over military operations, Pentagon personnel decisions and the administration’s handling of the war with Iran. Trump has also reportedly questioned whether Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine gave him overly optimistic assessments about how quickly the conflict would conclude.

For now, Hegseth remains in his position, and no announcement has been made regarding a Cabinet change. DeSantis is among the names being floated, but Trump has not publicly confirmed that he intends to replace the defense secretary.
