Greg Cunningham, the Republican candidate for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District, spoke Thursday at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, where he used part of his remarks to remember Charlie Kirk on the first anniversary of his death. The official convention schedule lists Cunningham among the speakers for the event’s second night.

“I cannot leave here tonight without acknowledging the 1st anniversary of the murder of Charlie Kirk,” Cunningham said. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Charlie Kirk. He visited my church and inspired me…”

Cunningham has previously discussed Kirk’s influence on his decision to run for Congress. In an interview earlier this year, Cunningham said Kirk visited his church in New Mexico and that he heard him speak on several occasions in intimate settings. He said Kirk, along with his pastor, challenged him to become more involved in public life.

The convention, held Sept. 9-10 at the American Airlines Center, brings Republican candidates, elected officials and party activists together ahead of the November midterm elections. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are among the featured speakers.

Kirk was fatally shot on Sept. 10, 2025, while speaking at Utah Valley University. The Turning Point USA founder had become a prominent figure in conservative politics and youth outreach before his death.

Cunningham is the Republican nominee in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District. A former Marine and retired law enforcement officer, he is challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Gabe Vasquez in the November 3rd general election.

The race is being closely watched as Republicans seek to maintain or expand their majority in the House.
