The Justice Department has subpoenaed Sen. Ruben Gallego’s (D-AZ) leadership political action committee as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation into the use of campaign funds.

The federal grand jury subpoena was issued Aug. 21 to Gallego’s Juntos PAC and requested records concerning activities “on or about” Sept. 9, 2025. It also sought statements and other materials Gallego previously provided to the Senate Ethics Committee during its investigation into alleged misuse of campaign funds. The Senate panel dismissed that inquiry in June.

The subpoena states that the records are being sought as part of an “ongoing criminal investigation” and will be provided to a grand jury. The deadline for the PAC to comply was Sept. 4.

Gallego spokesman Jacques Petit said the PAC complied with the request.

“The leadership PAC has complied with and responded to the Trump DOJ subpoena because it has nothing to hide,” Petit said. He did not disclose whether Gallego, members of his family or his staff had received separate subpoenas.

The federal investigation follows scrutiny of spending from Gallego's political accounts. Previous reporting documented expenses connected to family trips to Disneyland, Disney World, Miami and Chicago, as well as more than $18,000 in childcare reimbursements since 2019. One reimbursement of $400 went to Gallego's mother-in-law.

Federal Election Commission records also show Juntos PAC made more than 20 disbursements on Sept. 9, 2025, connected to a Disneyland trip, including payments at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and numerous meal charges. Those transactions are among the spending now receiving federal scrutiny.

Another issue involves a joint fundraising committee Gallego established with then-Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) in 2022. The committee, known as the Swallego Victory Fund, spent more than $37,000 on Super Bowl tickets and meals before it was terminated, with roughly $7,600 subsequently distributed to each lawmaker's campaign.

The subpoena represents a new federal inquiry separate from the Senate Ethics Committee's review. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) filed the complaint that prompted the Senate investigation, while Gallego's office previously characterized the federal scrutiny as politically motivated.

The Senate Ethics Committee's dismissal of its inquiry does not resolve the separate Justice Department investigation. No criminal charges have been announced against Gallego, and the subpoena itself does not establish that any wrongdoing occurred.
