Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has opened an investigation into an election reporting failure in Seminole County after officials discovered that a missing memory card contained hundreds of Election Day votes that had not been uploaded to the county's election management system.
The discrepancy emerged during routine post-election checks, when the Secretary of State's office identified 388 more votes recorded than votes cast in the county. Officials contacted Seminole County election administrators, who determined that a memory card containing election results had not been properly uploaded.
The missing results changed the standing of Georgia House District 154, where Republican state Rep. Gerald Greene had initially trailed Democratic challenger Harry James by 58 votes. After the additional votes were included, Greene moved into a 262-vote lead.
Raffensperger said his office is investigating how the memory card was overlooked and why the discrepancy was not identified before the initial results were reported. The investigation will examine the county's handling of the election data and the circumstances surrounding the late upload.
The discovery could affect the balance of power in the Georgia House, where Democrats had secured a newly won majority in the 2026 midterm elections. If Greene's lead holds through certification, Democrats would lose a seat from their expected majority before taking control of the chamber.
Seminole County officials have until Monday to certify the election results. The investigation and certification process will determine whether the updated totals stand as the official results of the District 154 race.
