Republican Sen. John Curtis of Utah urged the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday to investigate whether Donald Trump Jr. leveraged his father's presidency for personal gain.

In a letter to committee leaders, Curtis requested subpoenas for Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden to examine their business relationships, foreign ties, and any gifts or benefits received. The move follows reports that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, who has ties to Vladimir Putin, helped fund a lavish wedding after-party for Trump Jr. in the Bahamas earlier this year.

Curtis highlighted the need for consistent standards, noting that Republicans had aggressively investigated Hunter Biden's foreign dealings in prior years. "The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president," he wrote.

The senator pointed to additional concerns about Trump Jr.'s promotion of cryptocurrency ventures, international real estate deals, and investments in prediction markets that could benefit from federal regulatory decisions. He described the reported wedding payment as raising legitimate questions about foreign access to presidential family members and potential national security risks.

President Trump stated that his son would repay Kremlev for what was described as a wedding gift, though Curtis rejected that framing in a social media post, comparing it unfavorably to a simple household item.

The request comes weeks before November midterm elections and represents a notable break by a Republican senator from the president. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley indicated he would review the facts before deciding on next steps.

Democrats had already launched their own inquiries into the wedding payments last week. Curtis's letter emphasized the importance of congressional oversight applying regardless of which party holds the White House.
