Two major Republican-aligned super PAC operations are withdrawing financial support from several congressional races as GOP leaders prioritize districts they believe offer better chances of victory in the November midterms.
The Congressional Leadership Fund, aligned with House Speaker Mike Johnson, and super PACs affiliated with President Donald Trump are pulling planned spending from New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, where Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. faces Democrat Rebecca Bennett, and Iowa’s 1st District, where Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks is challenging Democrat Christina Bohannan and independent candidate Michael Bridgford.
Republican groups are also scaling back efforts in Ohio’s 1st District, where Democratic Rep. Greg Landsman faces Republican challenger Eric Conroy, and Michigan’s 8th District, represented by Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet. Republican challenger Thomas J. Smith is also listed in the Michigan race, although he suspended his campaign in July.
The latest withdrawals add to the party’s broader effort to triage its congressional map. Nevada’s 3rd District, where Democratic Rep. Susie Lee faces Republican Marty O’Donnell and Independent American Party candidate Jon Kamerath, has also been described as a race Republicans are abandoning.
The Congressional Leadership Fund has reportedly redirected $10 million from four districts, including the New Jersey, Iowa, Ohio and Michigan contests, toward 16 other Republican-held districts where the group sees stronger opportunities to protect the party’s majority.
The decisions underscore the difficult political environment facing Republicans as they try to maintain control of the House. Rather than continuing to spend heavily in every competitive race, national groups are concentrating their resources on districts they believe remain within reach.
With Election Day approaching, the funding shifts signal that Republican leaders are making increasingly difficult choices about which candidates to support as they work to limit potential losses.
