The House Oversight Committee has subpoenaed Dr. Wladimir Lorentz, founder and chief medical officer of the Miami-based company operating as "Have My Baby in Miami," for testimony at a September 1 hearing.

Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., sent the subpoena after Lorentz declined a voluntary appearance. His attorney cited a pending criminal investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.

"As the Founder and Chief Medical Officer of a company doing business as 'Have My Baby in Miami,' your knowledge regarding the company’s marketing practices and direct observations relevant to the birth tourism industry is vital to the immediate investigation," the subpoena letter stated.

The hearing, led by Rep. Brandon Gill's task force within the Oversight Committee, will examine national security concerns tied to birth tourism. The White House raised alarms on the practice earlier this month.

Have My Baby in Miami markets services to foreign expectant mothers seeking to give birth in the United States. The company has promoted assistance with logistics, housing, and medical care, and previously claimed to have facilitated more than 2,000 births for international clients.

Lawmakers have highlighted that many clients come from China and Russia, raising concerns about visa fraud and potential national security risks. Federal rules prohibit B-1/B-2 tourist visas when the primary purpose is to obtain U.S. citizenship for a child.

The Oversight Committee opened its probe into the company and three others in May, requesting records on marketing, client numbers, and fees. The investigation builds on earlier reporting and statements from Gill, who has described birth tourism as an abuse of immigration law.

Testimony at the hearing is also expected from Dr. Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies. Estimates from the group placed annual births to women on tourist visas at around 26,000 in 2020, with more recent figures suggesting growth to approximately 70,000 births linked to temporary visitors in 2023.

It remains unclear whether Lorentz will comply with the subpoena or appear at the hearing.
