The campaign of Republican Sen. Jon Husted of Ohio fired its political director after learning of a social media post from 2018 that featured a photo of Nazi SS Soldiers.

Stephen B. Woytek, 25, had been named to the role in August. He was working on Husted's reelection bid in a competitive Senate race against former Sen. Sherrod Brown.

The Washington Post first reported the post on Friday. In it, Woytek had used an image of soldiers from the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler division as his Facebook profile picture. He also followed a military reenactment group focused on that unit and maintained a Spotify playlist with songs referencing Rhodesia.

Amy Natoce, a spokeswoman for the Husted campaign, said in a statement that Woytek's social media activity showed a complete lack of judgment and disregard for its impact on others. She added that upon learning of the posts Friday, Husted made the immediate decision to part ways.

Woytek, a Citadel graduate and U.S. Army lieutenant who serves in the Ohio National Guard, said he participates in historical reenactments. In a statement to the Post, he rejected the racist and antisemitic ideology of the SS and Nazi Germany. He said he should have exercised better judgment when posting about his activities online.

The campaign noted that Woytek denies negative intent but emphasized that Sen. Husted demands better from those who represent him.
