The Iowa Hawkeyes appeared to be out of time before quarterback Hank Brown delivered the game-winning pass on the final play of the afternoon, lifting Iowa to a 20-19 victory over No. 18 Michigan.

Michigan had taken a 19-14 lead with 12:11 remaining when quarterback Bryce Underwood connected with JJ Buchanan for a 49-yard touchdown. The Wolverines then forced Iowa into a desperate situation as the clock wound down.

Iowa responded by driving deep into Michigan territory. Brown connected with Alex Ostrenga for a 29-yard gain with 11 seconds left, putting the Hawkeyes at the Michigan 16-yard line with one final opportunity. After two incomplete passes and a defensive penalty against Michigan, Iowa had just two seconds remaining.

Brown took the snap and found Reece Vander Zee for a 16-yard touchdown in the end zone. The score put Iowa ahead 20-19 with two seconds left and proved to be the final play of the game.

The Hawkeyes had entered the fourth quarter trailing 13-7 before Brown and Vander Zee connected for their first touchdown of the period with 14:07 remaining, briefly tying the game at 13-13. Michigan answered with Underwood’s touchdown pass to Buchanan, but Iowa’s offense got the last chance and converted it.

Brown completed 21 of 35 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Vander Zee finished with five receptions for 67 yards, including both of Iowa’s fourth-quarter scores. Underwood threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns for Michigan, while Buchanan recorded five catches for 130 yards and two scores.

Michigan outgained Iowa 429-285 and held the ball for more than 34 minutes, but the Hawkeyes avoided a turnover and made the decisive play when the game was on the line. The victory moved Iowa to 4-0 and handed the Wolverines their first loss of the season.
