Israel's military announced Friday that it killed a senior Hamas commander in a targeted airstrike in Gaza the previous day. The operation struck Mohammed Abdel Salam al-Yazouri, also known as Abu al-Haytham, who served as commander of the Khan Younis Brigade and held a position on Hamas's higher leadership council.

Hamas's armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed al-Yazouri's death in the Thursday strike near Al-Mawasi. The group highlighted his prominent role in planning the October 7, 2023, attacks that killed over 1,200 Israelis and triggered the ongoing conflict. The Israeli military stated the strike also eliminated two additional Hamas commanders.

Officials described al-Yazouri as a key figure responsible for military and security operations in the Khan Younis area. The action occurred amid reports of Hamas attempting to rebuild capabilities and conduct attacks in violation of a 2025 ceasefire framework supported by U.S. mediation efforts.

This latest strike reflects Israel's continued focus on dismantling Hamas's command structure to prevent future threats. Al-Yazouri's elimination removes a leader directly tied to the group's most devastating assault on Israeli civilians. Similar operations have targeted other Hamas operatives involved in sniper training and recruitment activities in recent days.

The developments underscore the challenges in maintaining any ceasefire when Hamas continues to prioritize military reconstitution over compliance. Israel maintains that such precise actions against designated terrorists are essential for protecting its citizens and restoring security in the region.
