The British government announced Monday that Manchester will host the G20 leaders' summit in 2027.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, said he was pleased to welcome U.S. President Donald Trump and other world leaders to the city. The summit is scheduled for November 27 and 28 at the Manchester Central Convention Centre.

The event marks the largest summit ever held in Manchester. Planning has already begun, and hundreds of local residents are expected to participate in preparations. The UK will assume the G20 presidency from the United States in December.

Manchester was selected earlier this year, before Burnham took office. The decision aligns with efforts to promote regional growth and devolution by holding major international events outside London. Additional G20-related events will occur across the country during the UK's presidency.

The G20 brings together the world's largest economies, which account for roughly 85 percent of global GDP. Past UK-hosted summits, such as the 2009 meeting in London, focused on economic stability and recovery.

Downing Street emphasized that the 2027 presidency will prioritize stable growth, fair trade, and investment to deliver prosperity throughout the UK. Recent data shows G20 members have directed more than 3,800 investment projects into Britain over the past three years, supporting nearly 200,000 jobs.

Security arrangements for the summit are expected to be the most extensive the city has seen. Manchester Central has previously hosted large political conferences and major events, making it suitable for the scale required.

Burnham noted in remarks to reporters that he corrected Trump during their first phone call after becoming prime minister, stating that Manchester is not merely a town but a major city capable of hosting global leaders.
