First Lady Melania Trump announced a $5 million endowment fund with Louisiana State University on Saturday to support scholarships for students who have experienced foster care.
The funding establishes a permanent Fostering the Future endowment at LSU. The initiative provides ongoing financial support to eligible students pursuing higher education at the flagship campus in Baton Rouge.
Trump made the announcement during a campus visit in Baton Rouge ahead of the LSU Tigers versus Alabama Crimson Tide football game at Tiger Stadium. The program received promotion across the campus and during pre-game activities, drawing attention from students, alumni, and university leaders gathered for the high-profile Southeastern Conference matchup.
The Fostering the Future effort began in 2021 as part of the first lady's broader Be Best agenda. It now partners with more than 20 universities nationwide to expand college access for foster youth through targeted financial assistance and support services.
One LSU junior, Wynter Allen, who entered foster care at age 16, received a $10,000 scholarship through the program. Allen plans to graduate with a journalism degree and credited the funding with easing financial pressures during her studies.
The endowment will generate annual scholarship awards for qualifying LSU students, creating a sustainable resource that addresses barriers often faced by those transitioning from the foster care system into higher education.
President Trump was not scheduled to attend the game. The matchup between the Tigers and Crimson Tide drew significant attention as a key Southeastern Conference contest with implications for conference standings.
Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services officials highlighted the endowment as an investment that creates lasting opportunities for young people who have faced challenges in the foster system. They noted the importance of educational support in helping foster youth achieve stability and success after aging out of care.
The announcement aligns with ongoing efforts to improve outcomes for foster youth through targeted educational support at participating institutions across the country. University administrators at LSU expressed appreciation for the first lady's commitment to the cause during her visit.
