Billionaire Elon Musk has contributed more than $276 million to Republican political groups since July, providing a major financial boost to the party as it fights to retain control of Congress in the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
The contributions make Musk the largest known political donor of the 2026 election cycle, according to figures provided by his representatives to The New York Times. His spending is directed toward a network of Republican super PACs and political organizations working to elect GOP candidates and mobilize conservative voters.
Musk's largest contribution was $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, a major super PAC dedicated to supporting Republican Senate candidates. The donation ranks among the largest in American political history and exceeded the amount raised by the group's Democratic counterpart during the same quarter.
He also gave more than $76 million to America PAC, the political organization he founded in 2024 to help elect President Donald Trump. The group is now targeting seven competitive Senate races and nearly three dozen House contests, with an emphasis on reaching conservative voters who might otherwise stay home during a midterm election.
America PAC officials said the organization deployed nearly 3,000 paid canvassers last week and has knocked on approximately 6.5 million doors nationwide, illustrating the scale of its voter outreach operation.
Musk's other contributions include $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, $10 million to a super PAC supporting Texas Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
His latest spending comes despite a public declaration last year that he intended to scale back his political involvement following a bitter dispute with Trump.
"In terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future," Musk said in 2025.
However, Musk has contributed approximately $366 million to federal political committees during the 2025-26 election cycle, surpassing the roughly $290 million he spent supporting Trump and other Republicans in 2024.
America PAC spokesman Andrew Romeo argued that Republican victories are essential to preventing Democrats from advancing their political agenda.
"If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country," Romeo told The New York Times.
Texas has emerged as a particularly important battleground for Musk's political operation, accounting for more than one-third of America PAC's disclosed spending. The group has targeted Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico over transgender-related issues while supporting Paxton's bid for the Senate.
Although Musk has largely avoided campaigning publicly alongside candidates, his relationship with Trump appears to have improved since their highly publicized dispute last year. Trump recently praised the billionaire as "our modern-day Thomas Edison."
America PAC also plans to remain active through the 2028 presidential election, indicating that Musk's financial backing of Republican candidates and causes is likely to extend beyond the current midterm cycle.
With control of Congress at stake, Musk's spending gives Republican candidates access to a substantial network of funding and voter outreach operations as both parties prepare for Election Day.
