Newly released body-camera footage provides a detailed look at the December 2024 arrest of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City.

The footage, obtained by CNN, shows officers approaching Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona shortly after 9 a.m. on Dec. 9, 2024, following a tip that ultimately ended a nationwide five-day manhunt.

Officers initially approached Mangione while he was seated at a table toward the back of the restaurant. They asked him to lower his mask, and he complied before identifying himself as “Mark Rosario” and producing a New Jersey driver's license under that name.

Investigators later determined that the identity was fraudulent and matched the name Mangione had previously used when checking into a New York City hostel before Thompson's killing.

Officer Joseph Detwiler later testified that he recognized Mangione almost immediately after seeing his face. According to his testimony, he “knew within one second” that the man was Luigi Mangione.

Rather than immediately confronting him about the murder investigation, officers initially kept the interaction calm. Detwiler spoke with Mangione about the food he was eating while other officers waited for backup. Police told him they were responding to a general complaint about people remaining inside the restaurant for an extended period.

Once additional officers arrived, Mangione was handcuffed on suspicion of forgery. Police then searched his clothing and backpack, finding a gun magazine wrapped in underwear. Authorities later alleged that the firearm and other items recovered from Mangione were connected to Thompson's killing.

Additional footage from the police station shows investigators going through Mangione's belongings. Among the items recovered were domestic and foreign passports, a Faraday bag, a jar of peanut butter, a handwritten note containing instructions for changing his appearance, a 3D-printed gun, a silencer and a handwritten anti-corporate manifesto.

Mangione had become the subject of an intense national manhunt after Thompson was fatally shot in Manhattan on Dec. 4, 2024. His arrest was publicly announced later on Dec. 9 by New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

The newly released footage offers a more detailed look at the encounter that brought the five-day search to an end, including how officers approached Mangione without immediately revealing that they believed they had found the suspect wanted in connection with the high-profile killing.
